Being a parent is stinkin’ hard. There is just no other way to say it. We have kiddos in all different stages of their lives; a son who is married and in the USAF, a daughter who is engaged and in college, a daughter who is independent and trying to find her way in this world on her own, a son who is struggling to find out who he is, and a son who’s biggest worry right now is if he will get any Xbox time after homework and before baseball practice. Add each of their own unique personalities with the crazy that is the world they are growing up in and wow…just wow. It can be overwhelming to try and be the parents we want to be. I welcome any and all help and direction, and I found something that I loved and I just HAVE to share it with you guys!
“Strong and Kind: And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed” by Korie Robertson is a must read in my opinion! If you aren’t familiar with Korie Robertson, she is the wife of Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson. I think nearly everyone is familiar with the Duck Dynasty series, you would have to live in a cave to not be lol. I had no idea that Korie was an author! But now I know and I must say I loved “Strong and Kind”. In this book Korie shares some common core beliefs that many families have based the way they live and carry themselves. Unfortunatley in this day and age we are losing those values, they are getting lost in the hustle and bustle of our day to day lives. Korie shares some character traits that are so important for us to instill in our kiddos, like patience, kindness, honesty, being joyful, etc. Her advice to just choose a couple, the ones you feel are most important for your family and be intentional with those is some of the best advice I’ve heard in a long time. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and try cover them all, after all you want the absolute best for your kiddos. She explains that if you are intentional with the ones you want the most the rest will fall into place.
This is just the tip of the iceberg! “Strong and Kind” is just full of wonderful personal stories of her own, stories and advice form her mother Chrys Howard, and even some input from Willie himself. I can almost gaurantee you that you will take something if not a whole boat load away from this amazing book.
